Calculate regular hours and overtime hours
This overtime hours calculator separates one shift into regular and overtime time. Enter the clock-in time, clock-out time, unpaid break minutes and the regular-hours limit that applies to the shift. The result shows gross shift length, paid regular time and overtime time.
How overtime hours are calculated
The calculator first finds the elapsed time between clock-in and clock-out, including shifts that cross midnight. It subtracts unpaid breaks, assigns paid time up to your selected limit as regular hours and treats any remaining time as overtime.
Overtime hours = paid shift time − regular-hours limitIf paid time does not exceed the limit, the overtime result is zero.Overtime calculation example
If you clock in at 8:00 AM, clock out at 6:00 PM and take a 30-minute unpaid break, paid time is 9 hours 30 minutes. With an 8-hour regular limit, the result is 8 regular hours and 1 hour 30 minutes of overtime.
Choose the settings that match your workplace
Overtime rules vary by country, state, industry, contract and employer. Some workplaces use a daily threshold, others use a weekly threshold, and some roles may not qualify for overtime. This calculator separates hours only; confirm the correct threshold through your contract, payslip, employer or official labor guidance.
