Hours-worked formulahours worked = clock-out − clock-in − unpaid breaksExample: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM minus a 30-minute lunch equals 8 paid hours.

From one shift to a weekly total

Hours worked calculator FAQs

How do I calculate hours and minutes worked?

Subtract clock-in from clock-out, then subtract any unpaid lunch or break time. The calculator shows the result in hours and minutes and as decimal hours.

Does lunch count as work time?

Enter only unpaid lunch or break minutes that should be deducted. Paid breaks remain part of work time.

How does an overnight shift work?

If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the calculator treats clock-out as occurring the next day.

Why do payroll systems use decimal hours?

Decimal hours make multiplication by an hourly rate straightforward. Eight hours 30 minutes is 8.50 decimal hours.

Calculate hours and minutes worked: shift examples

Working hours are the time between clock-in and clock-out, minus any unpaid breaks. These examples show how an eight-hour workday, a shorter shift and an overnight shift compare. Enter your own times in the calculator above to get an instant result.

Does an 8-hour shift include a lunch break?

An eight-hour span from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM becomes 7 hours 30 minutes when you deduct a 30-minute unpaid lunch. To reach 8 net working hours with that lunch, the elapsed shift must be 8 hours 30 minutes, such as 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Whether a break is paid depends on your employment arrangement and applicable rules; this calculator uses the break minutes you enter.

Use decimal hours for an hourly pay estimate

Divide the remaining minutes by 60, then add the whole hours. For example, 7 hours 15 minutes is 7.25 hours, not 7.15. At an hourly rate of 20, that is 145 before taxes or other deductions. Use Decimal Hours to convert a duration, or Hours to Pay for an estimated gross payment in your chosen currency.

More working-hours questions

Can I subtract more than one unpaid break?

Yes. Add the unpaid breaks together before entering the total: a 30-minute lunch plus a 15-minute unpaid break means 45 minutes to deduct. For separate break entries across a week, use the Time Card calculator.

Does this calculator handle daylight-saving changes?

This tool measures the clock times you enter and assumes an earlier clock-out is the next day. It does not use dates or time zones, so it cannot account for a daylight-saving clock change during a shift.

Can I calculate a shift lasting more than 24 hours?

This single-shift tool uses clock times rather than dates. Split longer periods into separate shifts and use the Hours Calculator to add their durations.
